I feel for the girls who had to use their bodies in order to survive.

It’s beautifully written, but is an incredibly intense description of sexual brutality during the holocaust. The two of them, along with another friend, survive day to day after the war by going to shelters and soup kitchens and by describing to one another what they are feeling and how they are dealing with the horror of being survivors of mass extinction.

She has to service 12 or more German soldiers per day while at the brothel except when an officer claims her for a whole day.

Immediately I sensed that Lustig had either been in the camps or was intimate with someone who eyss. The doctor that Hanka works for has fled in disgrace for transplanting “sub-human” Jewish skin onto a German soldier suffering from frostbite. As a Jewish boy in Czechoslovakia during World War II, he was sent in to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, from where he was later transported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, followed by time in the Buchenwald concentration camp.

But what I did appreciate was that the author didn’t use the subject of the girl’s work as oovely prostitute for the Nazi army as an excuse to be graphic.

What will happen to Hanka in the morning when she is discovered as a witness to the doctor’s crime? This is a warning on this book. He worked as a journalist in Israel at the time of its War of Independence where he met his future wife, who at the time was a volunteer with the Haganah.

At it’s heart, this is a story about survival. He returned to Prague in time to take part in the May anti-Nazi uprising. Against a backdrop of Eighties New York, he recounts a series of stories to his lover, Kitty. Your project is off to a good start! She does not do it. But what he saw the following morning was beyond anything he had seen before – it was an image worthy of a great poet, horrible and beautiful, because exceptional I was introduced to this wonderful writer by a friend who knew of my interest in the Holocaust experience of the human mind, through history, interpretations, memoirs and the creative arts.

Beautiful has been given a packet lustg cyanide by one of the soldiers and gives some to Skinny as a precaution. A large part of the novel is focused on two of Skinny’s customers in particular who are both high ranking officers but could not be more different in their attitudes of Jews in general and their treatment of Skinny particualrly.

That d Skinny is fifteen years old, Jewish and alone in Auschwitz. He has a hatred of Jews that prevents him from talking about almost anything else, and takes pleasure in hunting people mercilessly. Even Madam Kulikowa is executed on the day that the brothel was to be evacuated in the German retreat. Lustig is known as an optimist and this optimism is one of the qualities that has distinguished him among writers of Holocaust literature.

The story was told very creatively, with the first person POV being from a character other than Skinny This novel was simply told while still being moving. I cannot shake the feeling that I read something of his ages ago, but cannot recall what it was….

At times there is graphic violence and the sex that Hanka has to endure day after day is stomach churning. It took his breath away.

View Full Version of PW. A Novel from Amazon. The book added to the texture of my understanding. This novel also raises philosophical questions in regards to life, death, and what one does to survive.

Lists with This Book. Passing as an Aryan, Hanka’s days in the brothel are full of cold and hunger, fear and shame. The narrator kept changing, also the time period seemed to jump back and forth, both of which were quite annoying, so for this reason I only gave it 3 stars. Hanka Kaudersova, a year-old Jewish girl from Prague, finds herself transported with her mother, father and brother from Terezin to the Frauenkonzentrationslager women’s concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau, where she works as a cleaner in the hospital.
