The formatting really sucks for this book; it is hard to read–like literally hard to read. Moving on to this book.
The language was dull and lacked description keroiac for long periods at a time meandered off into drug-induced rants that made no real sense to the reader. It weighs in at a little over pages, but is full of love, disgust, drunkenness, excitment, and the peculiar next-day regret hangover.
The position of jazz and jazz culture is central to the novel, tying together the themes of Kerouac’s writing here as elsewhere, and expressed in the “spontaneous prose” style in which he composed most of his works. When he’s not crying for her to take him back he’s busy fetishizing her blackness like she’s a pickaninny doll and then drunkenly makes in-crowd jokes to his pals about Buddha and Boddhisatva.
Man, Kerouac could be a sexist pig. I was put of by the style when I began the book but came away concluding it fit the subject matter. This approach may have subterrameos, had these emotions and reactions been beyond the superficial.

It still doesn’t escape the fact that this is self-indulgence at its finest. Art in Kerouac as in so many writers becomes a way of understanding and transcending one’s life. I am occasionally keroyac or nauseated by the oddest things. The book became an American classic that defined the Beat Generation.
