I read this for my history of architecture course, and despite the eurocentric view, it’s just a fun read if you’re an architecture uohn who is fond of classical architecture and hearing it be described to you floats your boat. The author’s purpose is to set out as simply and vividly as possible the exact grammatical workings of an architectural language.

The book delivered what it summerwon But, with google images nowadays, I think a novice could work through this book and walk away with a keener eye for classical motifs. I found this the most helpful architecture book of all, admittedly coming from a standing start as a general reader rather than a student. This book does explain the foundations of Classical Architecture. See all 18 reviews. Sir Christopher Wren described them as the “Latin” of architecture and the analogy is almost exact.

If you persevere through all teh flipping of pages it is abundant with key information. His discursive style is not only informative but also really quite entertaining. Refresh and try again. Lists with This Book. Sometimes the author forgets that he’s addressing a non-architectural public, so those college days sitting in an architectural history course definitely came in handy. This book should be on every architect’s bookshelf – not just for the knowledge it imparts of the columns, capitols and pediments but for the lessons in proportion, rhythm and pattern as well as quite simply the pleasure of reading Summerson’s writing.

Classical architecture is a visual “language” and like any other language has its own grammatical rules. Also, probably since these lectures were broadcasted by the BBC, there is a lot of emphasis on British architects and buildings. Write a customer review.
