The book had its very interesting moments the search through the killer’s house, the rumble with the street gang but so much of the story was fluff cleverly wri While it took me almost three full weeks to read this book, it wasn’t because it was terrible. But, somehow, it didn’t bother me because the situations were so incredibly entertaining and, I felt, pretty well-written.
Alas she died in and frankly, wasn’t much of a reader when she was alive either. And once again we’ve got history: While the Alienist seem to be the classic of the two Dr. A juicy, fat weekend read.

Having said that, I hadn’t realized until just now that Caleb Carr has written a second book. I am stoked now!! I almost wish almost that Carr had written this as a part of a separate series—but only because my expectation going into it was something similar to The Alienist.
Carr puts forth the notion that if society was not so over-invested in defining the role of women as necessarily maternal and nurturing, some of the gentler sex mass killers might not have become the monsters they became. To my surprise, I often, however, missed little more than more detail and atmosphere.

Carr is so good that before you realize it you are in Old New York at the turn of the century, and so in-love with these people that you hate to leave them for sleep or work. Set in the 19th century when crime fighting techniques were at their infancy I enjoyed hearing the theories behind fingerprinting, ballistics and using sketches of possible suspects.
No, no – all the mighty weight of this sparkling society will come crashing down on our heads, too. There were moments where the historical figures inserted into the book seemed a little strange and I was pretty much left going, “Riiiight The change of narrator is refreshing at first, especially in the introductory chapter when it was revealed that the manuscripts of the Alienist and The Angel of Darkness were part of a bet made oscuridsd John Schuyler Moore and Taggert.
At any rate, this one has more than a few things in common thematically with my own WIP, including how women are treated in a male-dominated society.
