Martin de Haan Nawoord.
Marc ‘s review May 22, Even after a second read the first one was 30 years ago I find it difficult to value this novel. What is it really about?
De boeken van 1989: ‘De ondraaglijke lichtheid van het bestaan’ van Milan Kundera
A handsome Prague doctor, Tomas, who finds himself stumbling into a steady relationship, even marrying, but keeps on meeting lots of mistresses? Or his wife, Tereza, who keeps on longing for his faithfulness and true love, but keeps on having strange dreams about death?
Or the dislocating impact of the Russian invasion of Tsjechoslowakia in ? A bit of this all, is the obvious answer, but what licjtheid the binding element?
My second reading went more ondaaglijke because I stumbled upon the key to read this novel, very early after the beginning. Kundera cites the Greek philosopher Parmenides that water never flows twice through a river; this means that we are living in a world were all things only happen once and every action or decision is crucial and can not be repeated or undone; dependent upon your point of view life can seem easy or very heavy.
Kndraaglijke the main characters especially Tomas and Tereza Kundera illustrates how this existential issue translates very differently for concrete people: All this may suggest this novel is a tough philosophical work, and indeed, there is a lot of philosophizing going xe. But Kundera wraps it up in a seemingly light-footed story, cut up in very short bits and parts, making the novel rather digestable.
De ondraaglijke lichtheid van het bestaan by Milan Kundera (3 star ratings)
So my second reading tasted much better, but I still have my doubts. Kundera pays much attention to the unfaithfulness of Tomas, to the role of sex, attraction, excitement and disgust in human relations, and to the death-dreams of Tereza often in the form of executions. That raises the question: Does he have a real message, or is he just offering a divertimento on some metaphysical questions?
