Fux states that the composer should endeavour to use complete triads whenever possible but they may be incomplete for the sake of better melodic writing. Second species also essentially follows the same rules as for two-part writing, however, as we just observed with hidden fifths, there are other rules which make three-part writing easier. Please help improve it or discuss these issues on the talk page. For example, from the very beginning the author assumes you know how to read musical clefs, the notation of pitch and rhythm, and understand the concept of pitch intervals.

Please help to improve this article by introducing more precise citations. Once all the species are mastered in two voices, the species are gone through again in three voices, and then in four voices. However, analyzing the figures and trying to do them on your own reveals even more about the practice than is put into words in the dialogue.

This book is great for learning counterpoint and the dialogue between the student and master is hilarious but also very informative. It is amazing how Fux could make such a complicated subject seem simple, or at least understandable!
