A wonderful story, wonderful characters and the typical happily ever after ending. As for heroine there were times I wanted unaccepfable cheer for her like when she said she was not a uncaceptable but more often I wanted to jeer at her whole attitude. She hated life in the country and had no interest in raising their two girls. The situation has changed five years later. Choose love when you’re wanted for yourself. By the time she becomes engaged to Joseph, Michael is more than half in love with her, and he falls all the way when Joseph insists on taking Jane with him to Michael’s house for the holidays.

He works hard to maintain an appearance of well-bred ‘ennui’, and has a reputation as a confirmed bachelor, but like Jane’s cousin, Honor, that’s all an act. Random but the h gets her first kiss from the om while the ow gets hers from the H. Now, years later Jane gets invited along for her beautiful cousin Honor’s season to act as both companion and chaperon.
Fairfax could not be sure. Infatuation exists in the novel but it isn’t mistaken for love. And I found this an interesting point. N A L Signet, I confess to having found Honor to be very annoying in the way she insisted on burying her intelligence in order to attract a man, but then I suppose that’s me looking at her through modern eyes. The first half of the novel was compelling and interesting, but the second half just lost it for me.
May never get to read this one at the prices I see it offered for, but I’ll put it on my TBR list in hopes it will be reissued on kindle some day.
This story really appeals to me because the heroine is so level-headed. Honor was perhaps the most interesting character – Balogh has a way of making secondary characters nuanced and not quite what you might first expect.
She simply doesn’t want to spend the rest of her life loving a man with all her heart, while this man thinks of her as nothing more than a convenience.
