Kaparra Table of Contents: He never apologises for himself and he never lightens up. This anthology is neat because it shows every artist Pekar has worked with over the years; I really didn’t care for Robert Crumb’s caricature-like art, enjoyed Greg Budgett’s clean style so much more.

Radically departing from traditional narrative, Pekar relates seemingly simple anecdotes from losing the gas cap to his car to pondering death on a walk home from work that nail the truth about what is joyful and painful in this life more than anyone I have read in a long time. Pekar projects decency and balance in his life even as he struggles with his fears and insecurities. It was filmed entirely on location in Cleveland and Lakewood in Ohio.

If you’ve read the movie tie-in collection and have become a Harvey Pekar fan, this is the best collection to pick up next. The delivery is so casual, peksr and appears un-affected, that it makes the pleasant, interesting and funny stories about the authors daily life even better.
There was some great stuff on here, especially on the art side of things, and when Pekar’s humble, straightforward style worked, it was as good as good, early Raymond Carver. His dead-on eye for the frustrations and minutiae of the workaday world mix tiimes a delicate balance with his insight into personal relationships.

Often, Pekar’s introspection and self-awareness is disarming in the best way. Well worth six times that. The first story really sets the tone. Both day to day life and our internal lives are both so pedestrian and boring but also so deeply weird.
