Switching from narrator to the boy’s POV is supposed to help, but I find it confusing. It was a surprising feat for a story that was so short. The boy’s mind is as inaccessible to him as it is to the reader.

I appreciate that it is a classic piece of literature, and that we are to identify with the pain of the soldiers and the boy, cyickamauga to me, it was just a really depressing story that seemed nihilistic and fatalistic at once.
